The Great Orang-utan Project (GOP) is a signature project of WOX, representing a collection of orang-utan conservation programmes in Malaysia. It is funded by volunteer contributions and coordinated by our exceptional facilitators.
The GOP aims to see an overall improvement on the welfare of this “Man of the Forest”. GOP incorporates conservation, rehabilitation and education (link to Education Programme) programmes that bring awareness about the orang-utans and the environment they live in, the threats they face and their hopes as well as provide documentation of research, observations and progress of the orang-utans under our care.
Only a fledgling programme in 2004, the Great Orang-utan Project started taking root in 2005, it blossomed into what it is today, with several programmes running concurrently at various project sites (link to Project Sites). Partners (link to Partners) of each project site contribute to and support the development of our GOP programmes, making every programme unique within the objectives of the larger GOP framework.
The project spans several locations including ape centres of Malaysia located at Zoo Negara and Zoo Taiping, Matang Wildlife Centre, Batang Ai National Park, and the Lower Kinabatangan. Each GOP project site runs programmes unique to the location within the bigger structure of the Great Orang-utan Project. Each GOP programme is developed taking into consideration the requirements of the local community and environment bringing about measurable and quantifiable social, environmental and economic outcomes.
