Previously all turtle eggs laid at the project site of The Great Turtle Project where illegally poached but over 4 years the Great Turtle Project and subsequently the Great Marine Project has stopped egg poaching.
In Tioman, a conservation education programme was carried out over several months at one school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Juara. One day, our facilitators came across children telling their fishermen uncles to dispose of their hooks responsibly and took greater care in the disposal of rubbish in general, bringing the community a step closer towards developing their very own responsibility over the survival of the turtles and its environment.
Participants to the programme clean the beach on a regular basis. This makes the beach much more attractive to the turtles landing to find a suitable nesting site. They also do not get injured as they dig their nests.
