Great Marine Project

Future Plans

Turtle Ranger Programme

Patrol the beaches to prevent poaching, watch the turtles and record their landings, nesting and measure their size, protect their eggs, clear their landing paths on the beach... teach tourists about turtles, show them responsible turtle viewing  etiquette, have them join in your great turtle games... be a Turtle Ranger.

Be a part of this decades-long project by participating on one of our 4-day programmes.  Bring your friends along and make a difference for the turtles and the general marine ecosystem.  Choose to stay longer if you wish.

Conservation Education

As the threat of turtle extinction comes largely within the community as well as from its surrounding areas, WOX sees the education and involvement of the community in conservation among its most crucial part of developing a sustainable conservation outcome.

Having seen success and acceptance of the community in Tioman where a conservation education programme was carried out at one school over several months, WOX believes that the continuation of such programmes will only bring the community a step closer towards developing their very own responsibility over the survival of the turtles and its environment.  After the few months at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Juara, our facilitators came across children telling their fishermen uncles to dispose of their hooks responsibly and took greater care in the disposal of rubbish in general.

WOX is now embarking on a Conservation Education drive, targeting the local schools in Perhentian and its surroundings as well as other Malaysian and International schools, working with children to inspire, encourage and determine their personal contribution and roles in the future of conservation.

Rubbish Pontoons

Resorts on the island have trouble disposing of their rubbish and very often, rubbish are put into rubbish bags and piled high onto a rubbish pontoon in the middle of the ocean.  A mainland contractor comes by to collect the rubbish once a week, disposing of them on the mainland.  However, wind and sea conditions do get pretty rough, resulting in rubbish bags falling off the top of the pile and floating out to sea.  WOX volunteers have successful designed and carried out the building of rubbish pontoons that will not only reduce such incidences but also serve as a fish habitat.

We plan to build as many rubbish pontoons as possible so that proper disposal can be carried out, at the same time, encourage good fish habitats within the areas.  This of course goes hand in hand with an education programme for the resorts to compost and recycle.

Set up and manage an in-situ hatchery at Tanjung Tukah

In-situ hatcheries require governmental support, permits, landowner consent, community buy in, funding and construction.  With an in-situ hatchery, turtle eggs can be protected right where they are laid.  Proper care and nesting environment enhances hatching rate and provides protection from natural predators.  Hatchlings will be able to enter the sea on the very same beach their mother deposited the eggs, encouraging their return when they grow into adult turtles.

In-situ hatcheries also provide a source for alternative incomes to the local community.  Villagers living around nesting grounds will be employed to run and manage the hatchery, they will be paid to patrol the areas and educated on the importance of saving the turtles.  This will largely reduce poaching and encourage turtle conservation.

It is also a great place to have education programmes for students and tourists.  A well planned and managed hatchery can also serve as a successful education centre.

Marine conservation awareness programme

International and Malaysian tourists alike, flock to the islands to savour the pristine island life as well as to view turtles.  Most do not have the basic turtle viewing ethics and they usually do not have much knowledge on turtles.

WOX is currently doing mini education / awareness programmes at Tanjung Tukah by putting up fact sheets and designing posters.  We plan to embark on an island-wide campaign by roping in resorts and their staff, local authorities, the boat operators, jetty operators, tourists as well as the local community.

This campaign will include videos, posters, games, talks and direct interaction to raise turtle conservation awareness.  This is not limited to just the viewing of turtles.  It will also incorporate responsible snorkelling and diving habits, best eco-travelling practices etc.  It is extremely important to spread the message of ethical wildlife viewing, not just for turtles, but for other marine life and animals.
